Russian-Americans Are More Interested in President Bush's Fall From the Bicycle Than In the News About Democratic Convention.
Washington DC July 29, 2004 -- Russian-speaking Americans are closely following the pre-election media coverage, Press Release Group survey shows. However, they are more interested in the stories, which open personal sides of the presidential candidates than their political views. Ilya Merenzon, Director of research for Press Release Group says that 89% of Russian-speaking Americans living in the New York and Washington DC Metro Area indicated that they would be more interested in reading about President Bush's fall from his bicycle than about the new information about FBI's mishandling of the terrorists threats.
"We are electing a person, not a machine" – says Victor Orepin, 54 year old Brooklyn resident. "When I turn on the Russian Radio or open a newspaper, all I see is some political debate. It is really hard to see the person behind all these political statements. I want to see how the candidates live, what they read and whether they know how to ride a bike. Bush apparently can't" – adds Orepin.
As the day of election approaches, more Russian-Americans look for information relevant for making an election choice. Traditionally, Americans who came from the former Soviet Union in the last 20 years yield towards republicans. However, in this election more Russian-speakers indicated their intention to vote for the democratic candidate. Survey conducted by Press Release Group in July showed, that 51% of the respondents will vote for democrats. This figure was 50% in June and only 20% in November 2003.
